As mercury drops, Delhi hospitals see a 70% footfall rise due to winter flu and heart ailment cases

As the winter season tightens its grip on the national capital, Delhi hospitals are witnessing a significant rise in cases related to winter flu and heart ailments, leading to a substantial 70% increase in overall footfall. The affected population is within the 25-55 age group which comprises majorly of the working population. Healthcare professionals, including doctors at Primus Superspecialty Hospital, are sounding the alarm on these growing health concerns.
Dr. Vikas Chopra, Interventional Cardiologist, at Primus Super Speciality Hospital, expressed deep concern over the surge in patients seeking medical attention for heart problems. “The recent drop in mercury coupled with foggy weather in Delhi has led to a surge in heart issues in the local population. We have seen a substantial uptick in such cases in December, so far, leading to a 70% increase in footfall at Primus Hospital. In short, such weather coupled with high levels of pollution takes a toll on overall cardiovascular health. We advise residents to shun unhealthy practices like smoking and overconsumption of alcohol. We also suggest not to ignore the symptoms that can lead to cardiac arrest,”
Dr Vikas Chopra, further said that one should avoid early morning walks or heavy exercise in foggy weather as a poor AQI is expected throughout this season. Children and the elderly, in particular, should remain indoors, except when stepping out for urgent work, he said.
The drop in temperatures has also led to a rise in winter flu cases in the city, which is concerning as people are alarmed amid reports of a fresh surge in Covid cases. According to Dr. Vikas Chopra, Interventional Cardiologist at Primus Hospital, “We can understand the fear as there are cases of new Covid variant JN.1 being reported from some parts of the country. However, there is no need to panic as the new variant is just like the winter flu. In some flu cases, the patient may also imitate some of the symptoms of the new variant, so there is no need to worry. Meanwhile, the wearing of masks will always help,” he said.Dr. Vikas Chopra, further advised that it is crucial to take preventive measures to avoid winter flu or seasonal influenza. This includes maintaining good hand hygiene, getting vaccinated against the flu, and, most importantly, seeking medical advice promptly if experiencing any symptoms, he said, adding that people must get themselves checked even if they are facing basic symptoms.
