Ludhiana police engaged in a fatal encounter with Sukhdev Singh, alias Vicky, a notorious criminal wanted in 25 cases of armed robberies. The confrontation occurred in the Koom Kalan area on Machhiwara road, leading to the death of Sukhdev and injury to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Daljeet Singh.
Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal revealed that Sukhdev, a resident of Machhiwara, was a key member of a gang specializing in gunpoint robberies, with a criminal record spanning at least 25 cases. The encounter unfolded when a police team, led by CIA Inspector Beant Juneja, pursued Sukhdev, who attempted to evade them on a two-wheeler. The fatal confrontation occurred at Panjeta village, where Sukhdev opened fire at the police, resulting in a crossfire that claimed his life.
CP Chahal highlighted that approximately 20 rounds were exchanged during the encounter, resulting in injuries to ASI Daljeet Singh. Fortunately, Inspector Beant Juneja escaped unharmed due to his bulletproof jacket. Three accomplices of Sukhdev—Aryan Singh (alias Raja), Sunil Kumar, and Balwinder (alias Bobby)—were arrested during the operation.
DCP Jaskiranjit Singh Teja provided insight into the gang’s modus operandi, emphasizing their involvement in recent cases where they not only committed robberies at gunpoint but also opened fire on victims. The gang’s spree included incidents at a chemist shop, liquor vend, grocery store, money exchange shop, and fuel-filling station in Ludhiana. Recoveries from the encounter site included a two-wheeler and a pistol.
ASI Daljeet Singh, sustaining a bullet injury to his left thigh, is undergoing treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Highlighting recent criminal activities, DCP Teja outlined instances where Sukhdev and his associates shot a chemist, robbed a money exchange facility, and targeted a customer, leaving a trail of violence and theft. This marks the second encounter by Ludhiana police in the past 15 days, reinforcing a strong message to criminals that they will face consequences for opening fire on law enforcement.
It is worth noting that on December 8, Sukhdev and his gang shot a chemist in the leg, robbing him of Rs 1.20 lakh, a mobile phone, and a laptop. On December 10, they targeted a money exchange facility, robbing the shopkeeper of Rs 45,000 and four mobile phones at gunpoint, and also robbed a customer of Rs 10,000 in cash. This encounter follows a similar incident on November 29 when two wanted men accused of kidnapping and assaulting industrialist Sambhav Jain were shot dead in a confrontation with Ludhiana police.
