The Delhi Police metro unit has recently asked the Chief Security Commissioner to close some metro station gates that open towards the VVIPS Route in order to maintain foolproof security arrangements during the G20 Summit to be held in Delhi from September 9 – 10.
In a letter, DCP Metro, Mr. J. Ram Gopal Naik, has designated Supreme Court, Janpath, Bhikaji Cama Place, Khan Market, and Dhaula Kuan as “sensitive” stations.
According to the letter, all gates of Supreme Court Metro Station will remain closed from September 8th to September 10th. Khan Market’s gates 1, 2, and 3 will be closed while gate 4 will remain open for entry and exit.
The letter also specifies that gate number 2 of Kailash Colony Station will be closed, leaving gate number 5 open. At Janpath Station, which is marked as sensitive, only gate number 2 will be operational.
As per the DCP Metro’s letter, another sensitive-designated station, Bhikaji Cama Place, will also have all its gates closed. However, there will be no restrictions on passenger entry and exit at stations like Aero City, Dhaula Kuan, South Campus, Dwarka Sector-21, Panchsheel Park, Chirag Delhi, Greater Kailash, Nehru Enclave, Kalka Ji Mandir, Rajiv Chowk, and Chawri Bazaar. The two-day G20 Summit, scheduled to begin on September 9th, will see the participation of leaders and representatives from 40 countries, including 20 member nations.
Prior to this, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced that “Tourist Smart Cards” that would be available for sale at the dedicated counters in 36 Delhi Metro stations from September 4th to September 13th, in view of the G20 Summit.
According to a senior official, Tourist Smart Cards are normally available on regular days, but considering the expected increase in the number of passengers during the G20 Summit, these cards will be sold at dedicated counters for a period of 10 days starting from Monday.
The Delhi Police, which initiated preparations for the G20 Summit several months ago, is providing training to personnel who will be deployed at various locations before and during the high-profile summit.
In addition, fountains and decorative plants have been installed at major traffic intersections in the city, while strategic cut-outs
of langurs that have been placed in various areas to deter monkey menace. The G20 Leaders’ Summit will feature prominent figures such as U.S. President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron, among many other world leaders.
Representatives from the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the World Health Organization will also be present.
