The Karnataka government has officially banned smoking and the use of tobacco products, including gutka and paan masala, across all government offices and premises. This move, announced by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) on Thursday, aims to address health risks and enforce compliance with existing laws.

The circular issued by DPAR warns that any employees found violating the ban will face disciplinary action. This decision reflects growing concerns over the health hazards associated with passive smoking and seeks to promote a healthier environment for public employees.

To reinforce the directive, warning signs will be displayed in all government offices. The circular references the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, and Rule-31 of the Karnataka State Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 2021, which prohibit the consumption of intoxicants in public spaces. The government hopes that this ban will help protect public health and ensure the wellbeing of government staff.
