Jaipur shivers as mercury drops, fog disrupts normal life

The winter chill continues to prevail in Rajasthan. On Thursday, most districts did not witness the sunlight. Around noon, fog covered Jaipur, providing some relief from the cold. People were seen protecting themselves from the cold with layers, while those in Alwar found solace in warmth.
The harsh cold is impacting daily life and transportation due to dense fog. Buses, trains, and flights are experiencing delays in reaching their destinations. However, residents of Mount Abu experienced a different scenario, with temperatures dropping to minus two degrees. An increase in temperature by three degrees was recorded in the Mount Abu region.
Meanwhile, the mercury in 24 cities of the state remained below 10 degrees. The night was coldest in Mount Abu and Sikar, with temperatures reaching the lowest. Apart from Sikar and Mount Abu, Fatehpur recorded 2.8, Sirohi 4.1, Falodi 4.6, Jaisalmer 5, Bikaner 5.2, Churu and Pilani 5.5, Pali 6, Jaipur and Alwar 6.4 degrees. The night was warmest in Dungarpur with a temperature of 12.3 degrees.
According to the Meteorological Department, the conditions of dense fog and cold days are likely to continue in the state for the next two to three days. It is reported that a new western disturbance will become active from January 7.
Due to this, light rain is possible in some parts of the Udaipur and Kota regions on January 7. While on January 8-9, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in some parts of Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Bikaner, and Bharatpur regions, accompanied by thunderstorms.
Due to the cold wave, 18 cities in the state are experiencing cold days. Sawai Madhopur had the coldest day with a temperature of 10.5 degrees. In addition to Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Bhilwara, Alwar, Jaipur, Kota, Sikar, Baran, Sirohi, Fatehpur, Pilani, Jaisalmer, Vanasthali, Dholpur, Sriganganagar, Bikaner, Churu, and Karauli recorded daytime temperatures below 20 degrees.
Jaipur remained covered in light clouds throughout the day, and dense fog persisted from morning to afternoon. Afterwards, mild sunshine appeared.
Jaipur’s maximum temperature was recorded at 16.1 and the minimum at 6.4 degrees.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Jaipur’s maximum temperature was 19.1, and the minimum temperature on Tuesday night was 5.7 degrees.
Jaipur’s air quality was poor for four consecutive days, with an AQI of 290 on Thursday. The same AQI was recorded on Wednesday. Besides, Shastri Nagar recorded an AQI of 284, Adarsh Nagar 220, Police Commissionerate 275, Murlipura 348, Sitapura RICO 334, and Mansarovar 282.

Schools to reopen on 16 Jan given the extreme cold
Earlier, the government declared winter vacation for both public and private schools from December 24, 2023, until January 5.
