Jerusalem – In a solemn moment for the nation, Israeli leaders and citizens mourned the death of Col. Ehsan Daqsa, one of the highest-ranking army officers killed since the Gaza ground war began. As the commander of Israel’s 401st Armored Brigade, Daqsa was leading his troops in battle in the Jabaliya region of northern Gaza when he was tragically killed.

A Hero Remembered

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying, “Ehsan was a hero of Israel, a warrior, and a commander—a role model for the bond with the Druze community. He dedicated his life to the security of Israel and its citizens.” Netanyahu extended his condolences to Daqsa’s wife, Huda, and their three children: Omri, Reef, and Yasmin.

Courage Under Fire

Daqsa’s death occurred when he and another battalion commander exited their tanks to perform a tactical observation, only to be hit by an explosive device. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the IDF Spokesperson, praised Daqsa’s bravery, saying, “He was known for his humility and valor. Daqsa had been leading his brigade since the start of the war and had previously received the Medal of Valor for his actions during the Second Lebanon War.”

A Leader on the Frontlines

Daqsa had only assumed command of the 401st Armored Brigade four months ago. His leadership during the war was instrumental in several key battles. Hagari shared that Daqsa played a pivotal role in the Tel Sultan battle in Rafah, where his brigade likely prevented Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar from escaping. Even in his final moments, Daqsa led from the front, embodying the courage and commitment of a true warrior.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of Daqsa is felt deeply within the Druze community, which has long been a key part of Israeli society. Rafiq Halabi, Mayor of Daliyat al-Karmel, Daqsa’s hometown, described him as a “brave, legendary warrior” who had been actively fighting since the beginning of the war. Daqsa is the highest-ranking officer killed since Hamas’s October 7 attacks.

The Druze Commitment to Israel

Col. Ehsan Daqsa is the 11th Druze soldier to have fallen in battle since the war’s start. The Druze community, which makes up about two percent of Israel’s population, has historically been a loyal part of Israel’s defense forces. Since Israel’s founding, 440 Druze soldiers have given their lives in service to the nation.

The deep bond between Jewish and Druze soldiers, often referred to as the “covenant of blood,” continues to strengthen as Druze soldiers play crucial roles in the defense of Israel. Daqsa’s sacrifice highlights the community’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security.

A Nation in Conflict

The war has exacted a heavy toll, with at least 1,200 people killed in Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border. Col. Ehsan Daqsa’s death brings Israel’s military fatalities to 358 since the ground offensive began. As the war continues, Israel mourns the loss of one of its finest soldiers and honors his enduring legacy.
