Rum, often referred to as a “poor man’s drink” in India, has its origins in the Caribbean and has long been a favorite accompaniment to various dishes. The drink’s flavor profile can range from light to complex, making the crafting process crucial to its quality. While rum has inspired countless cocktails over the years, there’s now a buzz around India’s first jaggery rum.

Mysuru’s unique jaggery rum has recently garnered significant attention online, and for good reason. Set to launch on August 15th, 2024, after years of dedicated effort, this handcrafted single-origin jaggery rum, named Huli, is being produced at India’s first micro-distillery in Nanjangud Taluk. The founders, Arun Urs and Chandra S, spent eight years perfecting the rum, from sampling to packaging, to deliver a product reminiscent of what their ancestors once enjoyed.

The rum is crafted using jaggery, a staple ingredient in Indian households, and has been transformed into a premium spirit. Priced at Rs 630 for a 750 ml bottle, it will be available in stores at a reasonable price of Rs 2800, after additional charges and excise duty are applied. The first batch of 2000 bottles is expected to be available in Bengaluru.

Jaggery, with a history dating back around 1000 years, is still used in many regions where sugarcane plantations thrive, allowing locals to make their own alcohol at home. This homemade beverage is often spiced with local ingredients and stored in earthen pots. Interestingly, the famous whiskey brand Amrut is also preparing to launch its own jaggery rum, tentatively named ‘Bella,’ as revealed by Huli’s co-founder on X.

Given that India is one of the fastest-growing alcoholic markets, projected to grow at a CAGR of seven percent by 2027, there is a bright future for innovative spirits like Huli. Rum-based cocktails are an excellent way to enhance your dining experience, whether enjoyed with delicate seafood, regional dishes, or on their own. The rich flavor of the beverage is designed to complement rather than overpower, ensuring a harmonious balance with any meal.
