The schools in India are reopening from the Diwali breaks and the closures are still being watched in a number of states some because of Cyclone Montha and others due to Chhath Puja festivities. Below is the comprehensive state-by-state rundown on school closures and reopening dates for Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Schools Closed in Andhra Pradesh Due to Heavy Rain and Cyclone Montha Alert

In Andhra Pradesh, many districts continue to be under red alert as Cyclone Montha continues to pour heavy rains. District administrations have announced holidays from October 27 to 29 in East Godavari, Annamayya, Kadapa, NTR, Bapatla, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati and YSR Kadapa. The government has asked citizens to remain indoors and schools to postpone classes until the situation is normal.

Odisha Cyclone Montha Alert

Odisha’s Gajapati district has instructed all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers to be closed until October 30 as a safety measure against Cyclone Montha. The southern districts of Odisha’s state Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur have been designated as red zones. All 30 districts have been advised by authorities to keep themselves on alert in the event of the cyclone shifting its direction.

Will Schools be Closed in Telangana

In Telangana, schools and colleges in Khammam, Bhadradri and Kothagudem will shut on October 29 because of heavy rain predictions attributed to the cyclone. The state government is keeping a watchful eye on the weather and parents should check for official school announcements.

Will Schools be Closed in Bihar

Bihar still celebrates holidays for Chhath Puja, an important festival celebrating the Sun God. State schools are closed until October 29 and will re-open on October 30. It is being followed by bordering states like Jharkhand and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh because of the mass participation in the celebration.

Will Schools be Closed in Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, schools closed on October 27 and 28 for Chhath Puja, normal classes are to resume on October 29 although some local administrations have instructed parents to verify the reopening arrangement through school portals and WhatsApp groups.

Will Schools be Closed in Jharkhand

Schools in Jharkhand are also likely to be closed till October 29 on Chhath Puja. District education departments are issuing official notices and parents are requested to visit school websites and group messaging for confirmation of reopening.

Will Schools be Closed in West Bengal

Schools in West Bengal opened on October 29 after the Chhath Puja holiday but will be closed once more on October 31 for Jagadhatri Puja, a major local festival that is celebrated throughout the state.

Will Schools be Closed in Delhi

Delhi schools had a public holiday on October 27 for Chhath Puja and normal classes were conducted on October 28 and no other closures have been reported. The education department in the city has confirmed that all government as well as private schools will run as usual.

Are Schools in Tamil Nadu Closed Today?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet, cautioning against heavy to very heavy rain although the Tamil Nadu government did not announce a state-level holiday for schools on October 29, district administrations are free to announce closures depending on local weather. Schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur had already taken a rain holiday a few days earlier due to Cyclone Montha’s effects.
