Background: Ethnic Conflict in Manipur
The ethnic conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki communities has severely affected Manipur. The violence started over the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, opposed by the Kukis. This clash resulted in significant loss of life, displacement, and economic disruption. The persistent discord destabilized social cohesion and hindered political progress. Despite multiple peace initiatives, the region remains tense, with leaders and citizens calling for sustainable solutions to restore harmony and progress.
