Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Gujarat on Friday to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birth anniversary. The day, observed as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ or National Unity Day, honours Patel’s unmatched contribution in unifying India after Independence.

At the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, PM Modi offered floral tributes to the Iron Man of India and took a ‘pledge of unity’. To mark the occasion, he also announced the release of a special commemorative coin and postage stamp dedicated to Sardar Patel.

Why India Celebrates National Unity Day

National Unity Day is observed every year on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The day highlights his pivotal role in integrating more than 560 princely states into one unified India after independence in 1947.

As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Sardar Patel used his leadership and political acumen to bring together a fragmented nation. When the British left, the Indian Independence Act of 1947 allowed princely states to choose whether to join India, Pakistan, or stay independent.

Patel, through his mix of negotiation, persuasion, and firm action, ensured that most states became part of India by or soon after August 15, 1947. His steadfast vision and commitment earned him the title “Iron Man of India.”

Patel also created the All-India Services, which became the “Steel Frame” of India, ensuring governance stability and integrity in the early years of independence.

When Was National Unity Day First Observed?

National Unity Day was first celebrated in 2014, following the Government of India’s decision to honour Sardar Patel’s contribution to nation-building.

During the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations on October 31, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative. The programme aims to build cultural and emotional bonds among India’s diverse states and regions through sustained interactions and exchange activities.

Since then, ministries, state governments, educational institutions, and youth organisations across India have actively celebrated this day. They conduct runs for unity, parades, and cultural events that promote national integration and unity.

PM Modi on Sardar Patel’s Vision for Kashmir

During his address at Ekta Nagar, PM Modi recalled Sardar Patel’s firm resolve to integrate every part of India, including Jammu and Kashmir.

“Sardar Patel wanted to unite the entire Kashmir, just as he did with other princely states. But Nehru ji stopped his wish from being fulfilled. Kashmir was divided, given a separate Constitution and a separate flag – and the nation suffered for decades because of Congress’ mistake,” Modi said.

He further added, “Sardar Patel believed that one should not waste time writing history but we should work hard to create history.”

PM Modi’s remarks highlighted Patel’s determination to see a united India and his unmatched leadership in uniting the country’s diverse regions.

The Grand Parade at Statue of Unity

Before delivering his speech, PM Modi reviewed the National Unity Day Parade near the Statue of Unity. The event showcased the strength and diversity of India’s security forces.

All parade contingents were led by women officers, representing the BSF, CISF, ITBP, CRPF, SSB, and several state police forces from Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Assam, Tripura, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) also took part in the parade, symbolising youth participation in promoting unity and national pride.

BSF Gallantry Heroes and Dog Squad Add Special Touch

Sixteen Border Security Force (BSF) personnel who received gallantry medals for their bravery in Operation Sindoor were part of the grand procession.

The event also featured a marching display of Indian breed dogs from the BSF, including Mudhol hound Riya, who won the All-India Police Dog Competition. The display of Rampur and Mudhol hounds drew loud cheers from the crowd, making it a memorable part of the ceremony.

Stunts, Tableaux, and “Unity in Diversity” Theme

Adding excitement to the celebrations, the Assam Police showcased a motorcycle stunt display, while the camel-mounted contingent and band of the BSF added a traditional touch.

Ten tableaux from various states and union territories, along with those from special units like the National Security Guard (NSG) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), depicted the cultural richness and diversity of India. Each tableau carried the theme of “Unity in Diversity”, a concept deeply associated with Sardar Patel’s vision.

Statue of Unity: A Symbol of National Pride

The Statue of Unity, where the celebrations took place, stands tall at 182 metres, making it the world’s tallest statue. It was inaugurated by PM Modi in 2018 as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s legacy.

Located in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, the statue has become a major tourist attraction and a national symbol of unity and strength. It reflects Patel’s belief that India’s diversity should be its greatest strength, not its weakness.

PM Modi’s Message on National Unity

In his concluding remarks, PM Modi urged citizens to draw inspiration from Sardar Patel’s life and vision.

He said the country must continue working towards unity, self-reliance, and development, the ideals that Patel lived by. The Prime Minister also encouraged youth to uphold the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” by promoting cultural understanding and cooperation across all regions.

Celebrations Across India

Beyond Gujarat, National Unity Day celebrations took place across India. Government offices, schools, and universities organised unity runs, flag marches, and essay competitions on the life and ideals of Sardar Patel.

Police forces and paramilitary units also held parades and oath ceremonies reaffirming their commitment to national integration.

Remembering the Iron Man of India

As the nation marks Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, the celebrations serve as a reminder of his enduring legacy. His vision of a united, strong, and progressive India continues to guide the nation’s path forward.

Through his leadership, determination, and foresight, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel laid the foundation of modern India — an India that stands united despite its diversity.

In the spirit of his vision, PM Modi’s tribute at the Statue of Unity reaffirmed India’s unwavering belief in unity, strength, and national pride.
