Swaraj Kaushal is a colossus of sorts in India’s legal and political landscape, breathed his last on 4 December 2025 at the ripe age of 73 years. PM Modi Hails ‘India’s Youngest Governor’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid his tribute to Kaushal, hailing the latter’s contributions towards governance and the underprivileged. PM Modi said, “Kaushal distinguished himself as a lawyer and as a person who believed in using the legal profession to improve the lives of the underprivileged.” 

He also talked about how Kaushal made sure that, during his time as Mizoram’s youngest governor, his tenure was filled with insightful contributions as a parliamentarian. 

Who was Swaraj Kaushal

Swaraj Kaushal was a well-known Indian criminal lawyer, constitutional advisor and politician. His work in negotiating peace in the northeastern states with the Mizoram Peace Accord, established him as an important figure in India’s approach to insurgency and governance.

Born on 12 July 1952, in Solan, Patiala and East Punjab States Union- now known as Himachal Pradesh, Kaushal was 73 years old at the time of his death.

Kaushal did his Bachelor of Arts from D.A.V. School, Chandigarh, and took an LLB from the Faculty of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Later, he was designated a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India when he was only 34 years old; this shows his early prowess in law.

He was married to Sushma Swaraj, the former External Affairs Minister of India, on 13 July 1975. It was a deep personal and professional partnership which continued until Sushma’s death in 2019.
