In stark contrast to the recent hot weather, Delhi saw a large and abrupt decrease in temperature on Wednesday, causing residents of the nation’s capital to wake up to a noticeably cooler day. India’s capital, Delhi, is at the forefront of a noticeable shift in the nation’s climate. As the weather in North India finally begins to improve, Delhiites are starting to notice the change. Cloudy skies, a little drizzle, and warmer temperatures of 30°C during the day and 23°C at night make it easier to breathe in the city.

This provides a sneak peek of the upcoming fall season and is a clear break from the recent warmer tendencies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which highlights the varied weather patterns throughout the subcontinent, has issued heavy rainfall alerts for numerous eastern states, including Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh, while Delhi enjoys this respite.

What Makes Delhi’s Weather the Main Story Today?

The key narrative for Delhi is the tangible change in its atmospheric conditions. In contrast to the ongoing heat of previous weeks, the combination of cloudy skies, a drop in temperature, and the potential for light rain makes the atmosphere noticeably cooler and more comfortable.

This shift is characteristic of the post-monsoon transition, where cooler, drier winds begin to influence the northern plains. The insulating effect of the cloud cover results in a moderate nighttime temperature and a lower daily high, which relieves the normally hot and muggy weather.

How Does the Weather in Delhi Compare to Other Northern Cities?

While Delhi experiences a cooldown, other cities in the northern plains are still grappling with warmer conditions. Lucknow, for instance, is expecting a hotter day with a high of 35°C. The western city of Ahmedabad is experiencing a hazy morning with temperatures comparable to Delhi’s but higher humidity, giving the place a distinct atmosphere. Given this disparity, Delhi is currently the coolest of the main northern metropolises.

What is the Forecast for the Rest of the Country?

West India: Mumbai and Pune are experiencing stable, warm, and humid conditions typical of October, with patchy rain possible near Pune.

South India: Chennai is still hot and muggy, but cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad are experiencing comfortable temps with foggy mornings.

East India: Kolkata is facing a hot and humid day with mist, while the broader region is under a weather watch.

Where Has the IMD Issued Heavy Rainfall Alerts?

In isolated locations throughout a number of eastern and northeastern states, the India Meteorological Department has warned of the possibility of severe rainfall. The warning includes:

  • Assam and Meghalaya
  • Bihar
  • East Uttar Pradesh
  • West Bengal and Sikkim

Note: These alerts indicate active monsoon conditions in these regions, which stand in stark contrast to the dry and cooling trend being observed in the national capital. Residents in the alert zones are advised to stay updated on local forecasts.
