V Narayanan Appointed as New ISRO Chairman and Space Secretary

V Narayanan Appointed as New ISRO Chairman and Space Secretary

The Central Government has announced V Narayanan as the next Chairman of ISRO and Secretary of the Department of Space. He will officially take charge on January 14, 2025, succeeding the current chairman, S Somanath.

Official Confirmation

According to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Narayanan will serve for two years. The official statement noted, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri V. Narayanan, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Valiamala as Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, Space Commission for a period of two years with effect from 14.01.2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Extensive Career in ISRO

Over the years, V Narayanan has built a remarkable career in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. Since joining ISRO in 1984, he has held various important roles. Initially, he worked on solid propulsion systems for Sounding Rockets, ASLV, and PSLV at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). Additionally, he contributed to key innovations like ablative nozzle systems, composite motor cases, and igniter cases.

Current Responsibilities

Currently, Narayanan serves as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), a vital unit of ISRO located in Valiamala, Kerala, with a branch in Bangalore. Under his leadership, the LPSC has developed advanced propulsion technologies critical to ISRO’s missions.

As he steps into his new role, Narayanan brings nearly four decades of expertise to lead India’s space program. His appointment signals a strong focus on technological advancements and global competitiveness in space exploration.
