A devastating coal mine disaster has struck Assam’s Dima Hasao district, with multiple laborers feared trapped inside a rat hole mine in Umrangso. The mine, approximately 300 feet deep, has been flooded with water up to 100 feet, hampering rescue efforts. Local authorities have confirmed the discovery of three dead bodies at the site, although recovery operations are still ongoing.
Assam Police have registered an FIR under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, citing Sections 3(5)/105 BNS and Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Umrangso mine incident.
Preliminary findings suggest the mine may be operating illegally. Police have arrested one individual, Punish Nunisa, in connection with the case.
Investigations are underway to determine further details surrounding the incident. The Assam Coal Quarry, the location of the accident, became the focus of intense rescue efforts as authorities scrambled to save the lives of the trapped miners.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that
Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been stationed at the site. As of 9:08 AM today, three dead bodies were spotted from the surface, though they have not yet been recovered due to the dangerous conditions. The region, near the Meghalaya border, has witnessed similar mining tragedies in the past, with a major disaster in 2018 claiming the lives of 15 miners in Meghalaya.
