Delhi faced another harsh winter morning as thick smog and dense fog covered the city. Air pollution remained dangerously high, disrupting daily life. The air remained unsafe to breathe, while visibility dropped sharply across roads and airports.

The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) hovered near the “severe” category, making outdoor activity risky. Cold temperatures and calm winds trapped pollutants near the ground, exacerbating the situation.

AQI Near Severe Levels Across Several Areas

Air quality readings showed alarming numbers in many parts of Delhi. Several residential and industrial zones recorded AQI levels well above 400, which falls in the “severe” range. At this level, even healthy people can face breathing discomfort.

Authorities warned that air quality may stay in the Very Poor to Severe category over the coming days. Pollution control measures remained under close review as conditions showed little improvement.

Dense Fog Reduces Visibility, Slows City Movement

Along with pollution, thick fog added to the trouble. Visibility dropped to a few hundred metres in many locations. Morning commuters struggled as roads turned hazardous.

The India Meteorological Department issued orange alerts for Delhi and nearby states. It warned of dense to very dense fog and urged people to stay cautious while travelling.

Cold day conditions also set in. Daytime temperatures stayed low, while nights turned sharply colder. These weather conditions helped smog linger for longer hours.

Flights Cancelled, Delays Continue at Delhi Airport

Low visibility disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport for the fifth straight day. Dozens of flights were cancelled, while many others faced long delays.

Airlines issued advisories warning passengers about possible disruptions. IndiGo said:
“Early-morning fog is expected to affect visibility across Delhi and parts of northern India. During these hours, visibility can suddenly reduce, impacting flight operations.”

Passengers faced long waiting times as safety checks slowed take-offs and landings.

Health Concerns Rise as Pollution Persists

Doctors reported an increase in patients with breathing problems, cough, eye irritation, and chest discomfort. Health experts advised people to avoid morning walks and limit outdoor exposure.

Children, elderly people, and those with lung or heart conditions were told to stay indoors. Masks returned on city streets as residents tried to protect themselves from the toxic air.

Outlook Remains Worrying for the Coming Days

Weather experts warned that relief may not come soon. Pollution levels are expected to stay high as long as cold weather and low wind speed continue.

Authorities urged residents to follow safety guidelines and stay updated on air quality alerts. With winter tightening its grip, Delhi continues to battle a dangerous mix of smog, fog, and cold.
