Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Saturday, marking his first trip to the state in two years since ethnic violence erupted in 2023. His visit comes as part of efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and boost development in the conflict-affected region.
Interaction with Victims and Symbolic Gestures
During his visit, PM Modi met victims of the ethnic clashes between the Meitei community, primarily residing in the valley, and the Kuki tribes from the hills. These clashes began in May 2023 and have tragically resulted in over 260 deaths and left close to 50,000 people displaced. The displaced families lost their homes and faced immense hardship.
Before delivering his speech at Churachandpur’s Peace Ground, the Prime Minister interacted warmly with children affected by the conflict. He accepted a bouquet and a painting from them and was also seen donning a traditional feathered hat gifted by one of the children, symbolizing solidarity with the local population.
PM Modi was welcomed in Churachandpur as he arrived in the city. PM also interacted with the locals of the city. PM is set to lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore at Churachandpur today. The projects include Manipur Urban Roads, drainage and asset management improvement project worth over Rs 3,600 crore; 5 National Highway projects worth more than Rs 2,500 crore; Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, Working Women Hostels at 9 locations, among others.

PM Modi’s Remarks on Manipur
Addressing the public, PM Modi described Manipur as a land of “courage and determination,” emphasizing that “the vibrance of the northeastern state reflects India’s great strength.” He highlighted his government’s continuous efforts since 2014 to enhance connectivity in Manipur by increasing budget allocations for railways, roads, and air connectivity.
Background of the Ethnic Conflict
The conflict in Manipur revolves around deep-rooted ethnic and political tensions. The Meitei community has long demanded recognition as a Scheduled Tribe, which would offer them special constitutional protections. In contrast, the Kuki tribes have sought a separate administration, claiming systemic marginalisation and unequal access to land, jobs, and resources. The unrest has disrupted not only the local economy but also the social and political stability of the region.
While the foundation stones of these development projects represent a significant step towards rebuilding and reconciliation, the larger challenge remains resolving the underlying ethnic tensions. PM Modi’s visit signals the government’s intention to support affected communities and invest in infrastructure as a pathway to peace and progress. However, the success of these efforts will depend on sustained dialogue, equitable policy implementation, and addressing the deep-seated grievances of all communities in Manipur.
