South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has made Kim Boo-Kyum, a former Prime Minister, his special envoy to India, according to Yonhap News Agency on Sunday. The move is seen as part of Seoul’s overall diplomatic effort to enhance engagement with the world’s top partners.
Yonhap reports that Kim Boo-kyum will leave for India on Wednesday. Kim was Prime Minister of South Korea between 2021 and 2022 and has also worked as a four-term lawmaker and interior minister.
President Lee has also appointed special envoys to three other countries this week. Former Environment Minister Yoon Yeo-joon will go to the European Union, former Justice Minister Kang Gum-sil will be sent to France, and Democratic Party lawmaker Choo Mi-ae will head the group to Britain. All the envoys will depart by mid-week.
Furthermore, Yonhap also stated that Kim Chong-in, a previous acting leader of the dominant opposition People Power Party, is seriously in consideration for a position as special envoy to America.
The presidential office in South Korea is also in talks with 14 additional nations regarding the possibility of dispatching additional special envoys. Presidential Political Affairs Secretary Woo Sang-ho confirmed last week that negotiations are indeed being made.
