President Droupadi Murmu, while speaking at Rashtrapati Bhavan, urged that the process of tax collection should be effective, transparent and as comfortable as possible for taxpayers. She advised officer trainees of the Indian Revenue Service to develop systems that are accountable, modern and supported by advanced technology.

Tax Revenue Crucial for National Progress

President Murmu emphasized that government revenue plays a major role in India’s development. She explained that the funds collected through taxes are vital for upgrading infrastructure, improving healthcare and education, and supporting social welfare programmes. She called IRS trainees key contributors to building the nation and said that “tax collection should be a smooth process with minimum discomfort to the taxpayer.”

GST Reforms Mark a Major Transformation

Highlighting the recent improvements in the tax structure, the President noted that the Goods and Services Tax reforms implemented in September marked a significant step in reshaping the country’s tax system. She said these changes aim to boost entrepreneurship, create employment opportunities and ensure affordability for citizens. She added that the reforms strongly promote India’s goals of inclusive development, sustainability and empowering younger generations.

Broad Responsibilities of Revenue Officers

President Murmu stated that the duties of IRS officers extend far beyond collecting taxes. They serve as administrators, investigators, trade facilitators and law enforcers. She noted that these officers protect the nation’s economic interests by preventing smuggling, financial fraud and illegal trade while also making legal trade and international economic partnerships stronger.

Balancing Enforcement with Fairness

The President urged officers to ensure that taxation becomes a system of trust and equity rather than an obstacle. She encouraged the development of processes that are transparent, accountable and technology-driven. She stressed that integrity and fairness should always remain central to their work. Young officers, she said, should use digital governance, automation and data-based decision-making to make tax administration more efficient and user-friendly.

Preparing for a Rapidly Changing Future

President Murmu also highlighted the importance of continuous learning in a world marked by rapid advancements in trade, technology and economics. She urged officers to constantly upgrade their skills and stay aware of global changes. The President reminded them of their significant responsibility in helping India advance towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. She added that they play a strong role in achieving the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ by ensuring a stable, fair and supportive tax environment that promotes compliance, investment and entrepreneurship.
