The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi is going to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit to take place in China from August 31 to September 1, 2025. If confirmed, this will be the first visit to China by the Indian Prime Minister since the eastern Ladakh border stand-off between the two countries.
Last, Modi had met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a BRICS summit in Kazan, which occurred in October 2024. It was their first formal meeting since 2019.
Focus on Border Peace and Stability
During his October 2024 meeting, Modi flagged the importance of peace and stability along the India-China border. Modi welcomed agreements on border patrolling while stressing that mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity should lay the foundation of bilateral relations. Modi believed future talks would be heart-to-heart and constructive.
“This is our first formal meeting after five years. Excellency, we welcome the agreements that we have reached over the border. Maintaining peace and tranquillity over the border should remain our priority, and mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the basis of our relationship. I am confident that we will hold talks with an open heart and our discussions would be constructive,” he said at the meeting.

Xi Jinping Calls for Cooperation Amid Differences
Xi, responding with a call for enhanced communication and cooperation between the two countries, urged both to appropriately manage their differences and disagreements, putting into consideration their shared responsibility on the global stage. Xi emphasized that India and China should set an example for developing countries by strengthening unity and cooperation.
Combined Diplomatic Engagements
Subsequently after the SCO summit, Modi is expected to proceed to Japan for that particular annual summit, making it a paramount diplomatic trip for the strengthening of India’s regional affinities and strategic partnerships in Asia.
