Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inspected Gagangir to oversee preparations for PM Modi’s visit. On X, he emphasized the tunnel’s transformative potential. “The Z-Morh tunnel will open Sonamarg to tourism all year. It will become a top ski resort. Locals won’t need to leave in winter. Travel time to Kargil and Leh from Srinagar will also reduce,” he wrote.

Key Features of the Z-Morh Tunnel
The Z-Morh tunnel, spanning 6.5 km, connects Gagangir to Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh Highway. Importantly, it replaces a dangerous Z-shaped road that was frequently blocked by avalanches. Additionally, the tunnel offers all-weather connectivity and reduces travel time from hours to just 15 minutes.
