Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Friday assured that Operation Sindoor continues and underlined the importance of round-the-clock readiness of the Indian armed forces. Addressing a crucial defence seminar in the national capital, he said the character of war is changing at an accelerated pace with technology and multi-domain threats.

“The war fighter today must excel at all three levels of war – tactical, operational and strategic – across all environments,” Chauhan asserted.

He once again reasserted that preparedness of armed forces must be extremely high, 24×7, 365 days, in the face of evolving means of conflict.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Precision Response to Pakistan-Backed Terror

The comments are made against the backdrop of continuing Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory operation that was initiated on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. The operation by the Indian military included pinpoint attacks on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistani-occupied Kashmir, killing more than 100 terrorists and annihilating nine major terror installations related to organisations such as Jaish-e-Mohammad, Hizbul Mujahideen, and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

While Pakistan tried counterattacks against Indian military installations and civilian targets, Indian air defence systems and military forces foiled most of the attacks. India retaliated by striking Pakistani air and military installations, demonstrating the nation’s offensive as well as defensive military strength.

On May 10, 2025, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart requesting an end to military action. The ceasefire agreement was reached later the same day.

CDS Chauhan: India on the Threshold of Third Military Revolution

CDS Chauhan mentioned that the world is poised on the threshold of what he described as the “third revolution in military warfare,” a term which he explained as “convergence warfare.”

“This type of warfare integrates kinetic and non-kinetic platforms, blending aspects of first and second generation warfare with the third. It is coming together in tactical, operational, and strategic type of realms,” Chauhan said.

He emphasised the need to combine ‘shastra’ (warfare) with ‘shaastra’ (knowledge) to address the complexities of today’s battlefield, calling upon the armed forces to keep pace with technology-led changes quickly.

“We are witnessing an unmatched tempo fueled by an unrelenting progress of technology,” he further added.

Government Clarifies Operation Sindoor Was India’s Sovereign Decision

On Thursday, the government of India spoke about Operation Sindoor in Rajya Sabha, firmly affirming that the mission was initiated in reaction to a “barbaric” terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored groups. In response to a question, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh explained that the operation was “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” and not the outcome of any international pressure.

Singh also asserted that Pakistani provocations included strafing civilian zones and military installations, all of which were countered with “strong and decisive” countermeasures by Indian forces.
