A local court in Jaunpur, UP, has convicted nine individuals for the 1985 murder of Sureri police station SHO Babban Singh. On Thursday, the court sentenced them to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 each.
The case involves the killing of SHO Babban Singh, who was attacked by villagers in Sirohi Purva on December 18, 1985. Singh was there to handle a land encroachment issue when he was brutally attacked and later died from his injuries.
The police initially filed an FIR against 60 people and charged 26. Over the course of the trial, nine of the accused passed away, and eight others were acquitted. The conviction was delivered by District Judge Vani Ranjan Agarwal.
Government counsel Satish Chandra Pandey confirmed the court’s decision, noting that the lengthy legal process had finally resulted in justice for the victim.
