The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently retired its famous MiG-21 fighter jet after almost 60 years of service. The aircraft was inducted in 1963 and became the backbone of India’s air defense. It played an important role in wars like the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan conflicts and the 1999 Kargil War. Over the years, it trained many pilots and became a symbol of bravery, precision, and strength.

Protocols Followed When Flying MiG-21

Flying a MiG-21 required strict rules. Pilots had to complete detailed pre-flight checks, follow formation rules, and follow safety protocols. Solo flights and supersonic maneuvers were allowed only after permission from the squadron commander. Weapons handling and aerobatic maneuvers were closely supervised.

Wing Commander Jaideep Singh said, “Flying a MiG-21 demanded precision and courage. Many pilots took their first supersonic flights in this aircraft, knowing the risks.”

MiG-21 Fuel Capacity and Mileage

The MiG-21 used around 2,800–3,000 liters of jet fuel per hour during combat flights. Fuel usage varied depending on flying style, afterburner use, and mission type. Pilots had to manage fuel carefully during both training and combat missions.

Replacement for MiG-21

The MiG-21 is now being replaced by the HAL Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A. Tejas is an Indian-made supersonic jet with modern avionics, advanced weapons, and better safety features. It will continue the legacy of the MiG-21 while handling modern air combat.

Seating Capacity in MiG-21

The MiG-21 is mainly a single-seater for combat missions. Trainer versions, like the MiG-21U or Bison trainers, have two seats for pilot training.

Full Form of MiG-21

MiG stands for Mikoyan and Gurevich, the Soviet design bureau that made the aircraft. The MiG-21 was the 21st fighter in its series and became one of the most widely used supersonic jets worldwide.

MiG-21 in Bollywood

The MiG-21 has appeared in Bollywood films like:

  • Hindustan Ki Kasam (1999)
  • Mission Kashmir (2000)
  • Vijaypath
  • Lakshya

Its supersonic speed and unique design made it perfect for aerial action scenes.

Colour of the MiG-21

The MiG-21 was mostly painted grey to blend with the sky during missions. Some jets had squadron markings, but the base colour stayed grey. This reduced maintenance and made the aircraft efficient.

MiG-21 Firepower

The MiG-21 had a 23mm GSh-23 cannon that could fire 3,400 rounds per minute. In combat, pilots fired short bursts to save ammunition and avoid overheating.

The MiG-21 trained generations of IAF pilots and fought in many wars. Its retirement marks the end of an era, but its legacy, bravery, and achievements will remain. Squadron 28’s motto, “Sanharancha Karothi Ya” – meaning “Determined to Destroy” – truly reflects the spirit of this legendary fighter.
