Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Maldives on July 25–26, former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid praised India for its reliable and generous support. The visit marks PM Modi’s first trip to the island nation since diplomatic tensions strained ties last year.

Despite those frictions, Abdulla Shahid emphasised that India remained the Maldives first responder in times of need. He said India’s continuous assistance displayed both “maturity and generosity,” reflecting the goodwill of the Indian people.

PM Modi’s First Visit After Tensions

PM Modi’s upcoming visit carries symbolic and strategic importance. It comes nearly a year after the Maldives-India relationship suffered setbacks following anti-India rhetoric by some Maldivian officials and political figures. That period saw a cooling of ties and public controversies, particularly over military cooperation and aid.

And now this visit is a sign of a thawing. PM Modi will engage in high-level talks, discuss bilateral development initiatives, and reassert New Delhi’s relationship with the Indian Ocean region.

“India Responds First”: Shahid’s Firm Message

Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid openly thanked India for its continuous and quick assistance. “Whenever we call the overseas line, India comes first,” Shahid said, emphasizing the nation’s willingness to assist in situations of crisis.

He clarified that India’s reaction transcends politics and indicates its nature. “Indian people have a big heart,” he further added. Shahid claims that India’s assistance persists even in turbulent times, exhibiting genuine diplomatic maturity.

Given India’s obvious efforts to build infrastructure, provide humanitarian aid, and promote climate resilience in the Maldives, this recognition is noteworthy.

India’s Function as a First Responder

India’s “Neighbourhood First” approach has been a cornerstone of its regional diplomacy. The Maldives has frequently been at the centre of that approach. Through COVID-19 vaccine deliveries, emergency evacuations, and financial assistance, New Delhi has remained committed to regional stability and collaboration.

Shahid’s remarks are in line with previous opinions expressed by Maldivian leaders who recognized India’s capacity to offer prompt assistance in the event of major supply chain interruptions, fuel shortages, and natural disasters.

A Strategic Reset in the Making?

A more general change in Malé’s tone before PM Modi’s visit could also be indicated by the former minister’s praise. In the past, the current administration, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, had taken a more pro-Chinese stand and demanded that Indian military personnel leave the country.

However, as regional competition heats up and developmental ambitions rise, the Maldives may be reconsidering its position. A fruitful visit could change the dynamic and improve long-term cooperation in areas like economic development, tourism, and maritime security.

New Chapter in India-Maldives Ties

As PM Modi touches down in the Maldives, everyone will be watching whether this visit serves to revive mutual trust. Shahid’s friendly sentiments provide a positive build-up. His statement indicates that, though there had been strains earlier, the India-Maldives friendship has a firm base that is built on trust, proximity, and India’s unstinting support.

With this level of high-profile participation, New Delhi can not only reiterate its position as a reliable friend but also strengthen its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean.
