The excitement surrounding this year’s Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is somewhat understandable, considering that it is being held after 144 years due to rare celestial alignments. However, the unfortunate stampede that took place at the Sangam on January 29, resulting in the deaths of 30 devotees and injuries to 60 others, has raised worries about how far individuals are willing to go for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Even though the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented several measures following the tragic incident on Mauni Amavasya, the question lingers: can anything genuinely change if devotees persist in acting recklessly? A recent video circulated on social media underscores such a perilous act, depicting a man walking outside the railings of a high-rise bridge to evade the crowded Maha Kumbh Mela. Remarkably, the man succeeded in taking a few steps forward before leaping back to the safer side of the railing.

While the recklessness of the act is alarming, the most unsettling aspect was the man’s indifference to the appalling height of the bridge. The precise date and location of the incident remain unconfirmed. The video, circulated on X (formerly Twitter) by the user ‘scribe9104,’ attracted over 378,000 views.

The video provoked strong reactions online, with one user remarking, “Uttar Pradesh has the largest illiterate and poor population in the country. What do you expect by gathering these people at a place? A Complete disaster! They don’t need religion, they need education, training for years to make them a sensible person. ”

Another individual remarked, “Kumbh is full of classlessness, all these are the deeds of young boys, these people have turned such a lovely atmosphere into a problematic one. ”

A third user proposed, “They should be arrested for endangering lives by indirectly encouraging the public for risky behaviors. ”

For those unfamiliar, Mauni Amavasya was yesterday’s second Shahi Snan, which witnessed a huge influx of devotees, resulting in overcrowding at the Maha Kumbh. Sadly, the day took a tragic turn when the stampede transpired at the Sangam. The 45-day Maha Kumbh festival commenced on January 13 and will conclude on February 26.
