Philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, visited the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi on Saturday. She was accompanied by spiritual leader Swami Kailashanand Giri of Niranjani Akhara.
The visit, marked by solemnity and adherence to Indian traditions, was part of her spiritual journey to learn and connect with Indian spirituality. Powell Jobs also prayed for the successful completion of the upcoming Maha Kumbh.
Respect for Indian Traditions
Speaking to reporters outside the temple, Swami Kailashanand Giri praised Powell Jobs for her genuine respect for Indian culture. “She is very religious and spiritual,” he said. “She respects me as a father and Guru and is deeply curious about Indian traditions.”
Swami Giri explained that, as per temple protocols, non-Hindus are not allowed to touch the sacred Shivling. “She followed all customs and observed the Shivling from outside,” he clarified. He added that she plans to participate in the Maha Kumbh, including taking a holy dip in the Ganga.
Indian Spirituality’s Global Appeal
Swami Kailashanand Giri revealed plans to appoint Maharshi Vyasanand, the first Mahamandaleshwar from the USA, as a global representative of Indian spirituality. “Indian traditions are being embraced worldwide,” he noted.
Powell Jobs’ visit to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of India’s 12 Jyotirlingas, highlights the global resonance of Indian spiritual sites, especially since the inauguration of Kashi Vishwanath Dham in December 2021.
