Jharkhand: 80 Schoolgirls Forced to Remove Shirt For Writing on Them

A private school principal in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district has courted controversy for allegedly asking 80 Class 10 girls to take off their shirts as she found them writing messages on it. The incident, which took place on Friday at the senior most school in Digwadih under the Jorapokhar police station area, has sparked an outrage prompting the administration to initiate an inquiry, confirmed the official on Saturday.

According to Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra, the girls were celebrating ‘pen day’ after completing their examination by writing messages on each other’s shirts. The principal reportedly objected to the activity and directed the students to remove their shirts, despite their apologies. The students were subsequently sent home wearing only their blazers.

Parents lodged complaints with the DC, terming the incident to be deeply distressing. The parents were accompanied by Jharia MLA Ragini Singh and demanded action against the principal. Singh termed the incident “shameful and unfortunate.”

“Several guardians lodged complaints against the principal. We also talked to some of the victim girls. The administration has taken the matter seriously. A committee has been set up to investigate the matter,” Mishra said.

The inquiry committee consists of the sub-divisional magistrate, district education officer, district social welfare officer, and the sub-divisional police officer. The DC assured that action would be taken based on the findings of the panel’s report.
