Cheteshwar Pujara’s withdrawal from cricket has been a matter to reflect on across the country, with regret over having not sent off one of India’s most dependable Test batsmen with the dignity it deserved, expressed ideally by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. Commenting on X, Tharoor recognized Pujara’s grit and resilience but said they had moved on too quickly, awarding the veteran a farewell smaller than his contributions demanded.

Journey of ‘Mr. Reliable’

It was nothing but coincidence in rising for Pujara. Tharoor once again remembered seeing him first at an India A tour of England two decades ago, where his calm consistency foreshadowed the career to come. His debut in Tests confirmed the promise with a composed 72 in just the second innings he faced.

He soon earned the moniker, the rock of India at number three, having the only player qualify to anchor innings, absorb pressure like few others could. This sentiment felt strongest during that last series in Australia a surviving testament to the void he only created.

Fighting Spirit Beyond the National Side

And the action taken by selectors regarding Pujara was typical; his reply would be I will go back to domestic cricket, and score runs. The inspiration for game was enough; winds changed in Indian cricket: youth over experience. Many people do really realize his determination, but certainly, there is no proper farewell that underscores how cricket sometimes misses sentiment in its forward march.

In a very emotional and moving retirement letter, Pujara has tracked his journey from going from humble beginnings in Rajkot to the grand stage of international cricket. The spoke of pride in wearing the Indian jersey, of how it will never have a feel quite the same in singing the national anthem and of the huge gratitude he carries for mentors, teammates and supporters. It seemed to echo with both humility and quiet pride, like his play measured, dignified and resolute.

A Legacy Etched in Resilience

Cheteshwar Pujara may have been leaving the sport of cricket without any pomp and grandeur; however, Pujara’s contribution will surely be etched in the annals of Indian cricket as patience and perseverance. He incurred the classical temperament of a Test match, standing between India and a hopeless defeat. Not a cricketer, but symbol to millions of his unflinching determination.

As Shashi Tharoor aptly stated that there was much more to Pujara than going quietly away. His legacy, however, ensures that his contribution is never forgotten in the collective memory of Indian cricket.
