India’s defence strategy in 2025 shows how much the country is changing its approach to security. The government has made it clear that national security is non-negotiable. To achieve this, India is increasing spending, becoming self-reliant, taking a firm stand on Pakistan, and preparing for future threats with the Sudarshan Chakra Mission. Defence Spending and Exports
India is spending much more on defence than before. The budget has gone up from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in 2013–14 to Rs 6.81 lakh crore in 2025–26. In 2024–25, defence production reached a record Rs 1.50 lakh crore, which is more than three times what it was in 2014–15. India now builds fighter jets, missiles, artillery, warships, and even aircraft carriers at home. Exports have also grown a lot, reaching Rs 23,622 crore in 2024–25. Defense equipment made in India is now reaching over 100 countries, including big ones like the US, France, and Armenia.

Push for Self-Reliance
The Modi government is focusing on Atmanirbharta, which means making India self-reliant in defense and the goal is to cut down on imports and produce more within the country. The Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 gives priority to buying locally designed and manufactured items. The ‘Make’ process has also been improved to encourage Indian industries to create defence systems. This policy is making India’s defence industry stronger and more independent.
Clear Policy on Pakistan
India now follows five clear rules when dealing with Pakistan. Any terror attack will get a firm reply. Nuclear threats will not stop India from acting. Terrorists and their sponsors will be treated the same. Talks with Pakistan, if they happen, will only be about terrorism or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. And most importantly, India will never compromise on its sovereignty. The message is simple: terror and talks cannot go together.
The Five Red Lines on Pakistan
India has made its position on Pakistan very clear with five strong red lines:
- Firm reply to terror attacks – Any terror strike on India will be answered with a strong response.
- No tolerance for nuclear blackmail – Nuclear threats will not stop India from taking action.
- No difference between terrorists and their sponsors – Both will face equal accountability.
- Talks only on terrorism or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir – No other issue will be on the table.
- Zero compromise on sovereignty – Terror and talks cannot go together.

The Sudarshan Chakra Mission
To prepare for the future, PM Modi launched the Sudarshan Chakra Mission in 2025. This programme has three goals: full indigenization of research and manufacturing, use of predictive technology for future warfare, and building precise counter-systems. By 2035, the mission aims to give India a strong security shield that will protect both military and civilian infrastructure.
