It’s a historic move as Indian Railways launched its first hydrogen fuel train. The train was manufactured completely within India. It showcases hydrogen technology at its best and does not emit a single unit of carbon. It solely lets out water vapors. It is a step forward as India aims for a greener and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Hydrogen Train Technology
The hydrogen train represents the latest traction innovation offered by India’s Indian Railways Research, Design & Standards Organisation. The hydrogen fuel for the train will be processed at an exclusive production facility at Jind. The production process at the facility will include an electrolysis production method, with which India will be exploiting efficient green hydrogen production.

Design & Capacity
At present, it is the longest hydrogen train operating on a Broad Gauge platform and has a total of 10 coaches. It also holds the maximum powers with a total output of 2,400 kW. It consists of two Driving Power Cars with a 1,200 kW capacity and eight passenger compartments.
How will be Environmental Impact
The most impressive thing about the train is that it emits zero CO2. Unlike regular trains, it leaves no residue but water vapor as an end product. It is not only making India’s transport sector eco-friendly but also making it a benchmark for other transport sectors with its sustainable fuel.
Important Aspects of Pilot Projects
As a pilot project, the hydrogen train project enables Indian Railways to validate and optimize operations with alternative energy sources. Although it is difficult to draw any cost comparisons with traditional trains running on diesel or electric components at present, it paves the way for an enormous shift towards trains that operate on alternative energy sources.
Estimated Cost of India’s First Hydrogen Train
The pilot project including the 10 coach hydrogen train and the dedicated hydrogen plant at Jind, is expected to cost Rs. 210–340 crore. This covers manufacturing, plant setup and initial operational expenses.
- Train Manufacturing: Cost around Rs. 170–255 crore
- Hydrogen Plant: Estimated around Rs. 42–85 crore
- Operational Costs: Hydrogen fuel costs $8–12 per kg
- Maintenance: 10–15% higher
Future Prospects of Hydrogen Train
The hydrogen train project shows India’s commitment towards making its trains more modern and eco-friendly. Since successful testing has been conducted on these hydrogen trains, they have a great chance of transforming trains in India and making them greener and more independent.
