India is moving ahead with a big leap toward becoming a world leader in artificial intelligence. The Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that the country will develop its own foundational AI model within the next few months. This is part of a broader strategy to place India at the forefront of AI advancements.
According to a report in the PTI, the government has already hired 18,693 graphics processing units, which are essential for constructing the necessary AI infrastructure.
Improving India’s Digital Future with AI Infrastructure
Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that this endeavor is consistent with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s objective of making cutting-edge technology available to everyone. He stated that AI services, including those related to DeepSeek, will be hosted on Indian servers, assuring data security and privacy within the country.
The government also intends to develop AI data centers in Odisha as a reaffirmation of commitment to AI-led innovation in the country. India would use 18,000 GPUs to make it the bedrock of AI models that would be based on the particular linguistic, economic, and social makeup of the country.
IndiaAI Mission: Boost to AI Research and Innovatio
The Cabinet had sanctioned the IndiaAI mission with an investment of Rs 10,371.92 crore in March 2024 to create an industry-ready scalable AI computing ecosystem. It is supporting the growing AI startups and research institutes within the country and bringing in public-private enterprises partnerships that spawn progress in AI.
AI Innovation in Healthcare, Agriculture, and Governance
Sector-specific AI solutions are key focus areas in the AI strategy for India. Sector-specific AI solutions include LMMs serving critical sectors: health, agriculture, and governance. These will empower AI applications solving real problems that drive national progress.
Further, the IndiaAI Datasets Platform will deliver high quality, non-personal datasets to researchers and start-ups. It aims to hasten the overall adoption of AI across the industries as there will be easily accessible, structured data.
AI Marketplace and Public-Private Partnerships
In order to make accessibility of AI in all sectors, the IndiaAI mission will come up with an AI marketplace that will allow AI as a service. It will allow pre-trained models to Indian innovators by fueling widespread adoption of solutions powered by AI.
A technical panel from MeitY recently visited 13 bidders that were submitted to bid to supply AI computing and cloud services for IndiaAI. Officialdom from MeitY, the National Informatics Centre and key IITs are judging these bids with which they may collaborate to choose strategic partners.
Future of AI in India
These initiatives place India in a critically advantageous position to build a robust AI ecosystem that will fuel technological innovation and economic growth. Strategic investments by the government in AI infrastructure, data security, and research partnerships will be what establish it as an AI powerhouse globally. AI-driven solutions across important sectors are paving the way for a future where AI transforms industries and improves millions of lives.
