Mumbai, India: In a significant move to address food security challenges in Lesotho, India has dispatched the second tranche of humanitarian assistance comprising 1000 metric tonnes of sorghum (jowar). The consignment departed from Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai on Monday.

This initiative underscores India’s commitment to South-South cooperation and solidarity with the southern African nation.

Strengthening South-South Partnership

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced the consignment via X, stating:
“India & Lesotho: Global South partners in solidarity. India sends the second tranche of foodgrain assistance for the people of Lesotho. This assistance will help address food security issues.”

India had previously sent 1000 metric tonnes of rice to Lesotho in December to aid in meeting the nutritional requirements of its people.

Strong Bilateral Relations

India and Lesotho share a long-standing partnership rooted in shared values. This relationship has been reinforced through frequent interactions and collaborative efforts across multiple domains.

  • October 2024: India GCC Trade Council hosted a UN South-South Cooperation meeting, attended by Lesotho’s ambassadors.
  • August 2024: The 5th Joint Bilateral Commission for Cooperation reviewed bilateral relations, focusing on development partnerships, trade, agriculture, health, and cultural exchanges.

Indian Community in Lesotho

Approximately 4000 Indian expatriates and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) reside in Lesotho, contributing significantly as professionals, educators, and business owners. The Indian Association in Lesotho organizes cultural events in collaboration with ICCR.

A Step Towards Food Security

This recent consignment of sorghum highlights India’s dedication to helping Lesotho combat food insecurity while fostering stronger global partnerships.
