In a major step for international travel, direct commercial flights between Kolkata and mainland China have started again after more than four years. The first flight, an IndiGo A320 neo, departed from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Sunday night, marking a potential thaw in cross-border connectivity.
What Does This Flight Resumption Signify?
This isn’t just about a new flight route — reopening this air link shows that ties are slowly being rebuilt. Direct flights between India and China were first stopped in early 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the services were halted for years afterward, largely because of the ongoing border dispute in eastern Ladakh. The restart of this specific connection follows recent diplomatic initiatives, suggesting a cautious step towards normalized relations.

How Was the Inaugural Flight Celebrated?
The occasion was marked by a ceremonial send-off at the Kolkata airport. Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and IndiGo Airlines were present to witness the event. In a meaningful moment, one of the 176 passengers on the first flight lit the ceremonial lamp. This was done to show the renewed friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

What Are the Practical Implications of This Route?
Beyond the symbolism, the revival of this direct air link has concrete benefits. NSCBI Airport Director P R Beuria said this route will boost business and tourism links between the two major economic hubs. For travelers, it’s a big convenience as they no longer need long layovers in other cities. The daily non-stop service makes traveling for jobs, seeing family, or sightseeing far more convenient.

Why is This Important for Kolkata’s Status?
This move reinforces Kolkata’s position as a key global aviation center in eastern India. Having a direct flight to a major Chinese city like Guangzhou boosts the city’s links and economic reputation. It will help grow trade and personal exchanges, strengthening the region’s place in international business and relations.
