The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of India has approved expensive military purchases totalling ₹67,000 crore. The goal of these agreements is to provide the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force with state-of-the-art equipment. The approvals follow Operation Sindoor, India’s targeted airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

The new defense initiative will improve surveillance capabilities and India’s battle capability on land, sea, and in the air, particularly in mountainous and nighttime environments.

Boosting Combat Readiness with Night-Vision & Mobility

The Indian Army will soon acquire thermal imager-based driver night sights for its BMP armoured vehicles. These sights will significantly improve mobility and combat operations in low-visibility environments. This change will increase the flexibility and situational awareness of mechanised infantry units during the night.

The Defence Acquisition Council noted that the enhanced night vision will provide “higher mobility and operational advantage.” This system will directly support front-line troops deployed in forward areas where night warfare is often the norm.

Navy’s Eyes Beneath the Waves

For the Indian Navy, the DAC approved several procurements to bolster maritime warfare capabilities. These include Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, which can detect, classify, and neutralise underwater threats.

Alongside these, the Navy will receive BrahMos fire control systems and launchers, and upgrades to the BARAK‑1 point-defence missile system. These additions will enhance the Navy’s ability to defend against aerial and submarine threats.

Mountain Radar and Air Defence Upgrades for the IAF

The purchase of cutting-edge mountain radars has been approved for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Especially in Ladakh and the Northeast, these radars would enhance air monitoring along mountainous frontiers.

Upgrades to the SAKSHAM/SPYDER armament system were also approved by the DAC. The Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) will enable the IAF to more effectively integrate its air defense assets, improving reaction to aerial threats.

Unmanned Warfare Is the Main Event

The DAC issued Acceptance of Necessity for Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs), which was a significant step. The Army, Navy, and Air Force will all use these drones.

These RPAs will provide round-the-clock surveillance and strike capabilities due to their capacity to carry various payloads and operate over long ranges. They increase the force in contemporary hybrid warfare.

Ensuring Sustained Operational Readiness

To maintain the high availability of key platforms, the DAC also approved support contracts. These include long-term sustenance programmes for the C‑17 and C‑130J transport aircraft fleets.

Additionally, a comprehensive annual maintenance contract has been approved for the S‑400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System.

Procurement Push Linked to Post-Strike Deterrence

This wave of approvals comes close on the heels of Operation Sindoor, in which the Indian Armed Forces have launched airstrikes against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK.

With these new systems, India is not just responding with force, instead, it is preparing for sustained deterrence. A strategic shift towards preparedness, resilience, and quick deployment is reflected in the ₹67,000 crore investment.
