In his today’s Mann ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of Operation Polo, the military operation that resulted in the integration of the Hyderabad princely state into the Indian Union in 1948. 17th September would be marked as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ as Modi emphasised this event as a reminder of fundamental turning point in India’s progress towards unity, sovereignty, and nation-building, reminding the country of the sacrifices and resolve that forged modern India.

Historical Context of Operation Polo

Operation Polo, or the “Police Action,” was the name given by the Indian government to their action of annexing Hyderabad, a vast princely state in the center of India, which had wished to stay independent after India’s independence in 1947. The Nizam of Hyderabad, Osman Ali Khan, had originally stated his desire to stay independent, backed by a private army called the Razakars. The situation had descended into lawlessness and communal tensions, posing a threat to stability in the region.

Recognizing the challenge to India’s territorial integrity and democratic ethos, the government, under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, decided on military intervention. The operation was swift and strategically executed over five days, from September 13 to 17, 1948—leading to Hyderabad’s accession to India and the restoration of order.

PM Modi’s Reflection on Unity and Sovereignty

PM Modi’s Mann ki Baat put Operation Polo in the broader perspective of India’s unifying spirit. He emphasized how the action was not merely a military campaign but a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to becoming a cohesive, democratic republic. Modi praised the brave soldiers and leaders who undertook the mission, highlighting their dedication to preserving India’s sovereignty against divisive forces.

The Prime Minister also linked Operation Polo to today’s issues of ensuring unity in a large and diversified nation. His message asked people to recall the sacrifices made to unite all parts of India and to keep increasing harmony for national growth.

Lessons from Operation Polo for Today’s India

Operation Polo holds enduring lessons about decisive leadership, the rule of law, and the importance of national unity. Modi’s narration reminded the audience that India’s strength lies in its territorial integrity and the collective will of its people to coexist peacefully despite differences.

The operation also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced during nation-building and the responsibility that comes with preserving democratic values. Modi’s highlight of this historic event in Mann ki Baat aimed to inspire a renewed commitment among Indians to unity, security, and inclusive growth.

Legacy of Operation Polo

The successful consolidation of Hyderabad culminated the era of fragmented princely autonomy and led towards India’s establishment as an integrated nation-state. Operation Polo is recalled as a watershed moment that justified the vision of figures such as Sardar Patel, who remarked famously, “Every inch of India belongs to us.”

This reflection by Modi during Mann ki Baat is a reminder of the historical trajectory of India, filling citizens with pride and responsibility to maintain the unity and democratic ethos that characterize the country. As India moves forward in the 21st century, Operation Polo’s legacy remains a testament to the country’s steadfast pursuit of unity and strength amid diversity.
