Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the rollout of the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara electric SUV from Hansalpur, Gujarat, on Monday. The launch marks a key step in India’s ambition to become a hub for electric mobility. The e-Vitara, built in India, will be shipped to more than 100 global markets.

At the same event, Gujarat also saw the start of hybrid battery electrode production at a new manufacturing facility. The move will cut India’s dependence on imports and strengthen the local EV supply chain.

Boost to Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The government has been pushing hard to promote Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The rollout of the e-Vitara and the start of advanced battery manufacturing reflect this vision.

The new TDS Lithium-Ion Battery factory, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, will generate more than 80% of the battery value domestically. This will reduce reliance on outside vendors while also creating jobs.

What Makes the e-Vitara Special

The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara had its global debut in Europe and was later showcased in India at the Bharat Mobility Show 2025. Built on the 40PL electric platform developed with Toyota, it is part of Suzuki’s 10-year EV strategy.

The SUV offers two battery choices — 49kWh and 61kWh. The larger one provides a range of up to 500 km on a single charge. The smaller battery produces 144hp, while the bigger one generates 174hp. Both versions give 189 Nm torque.

There is also an AWD version with dual motors that deliver 184hp and 300 N · m torque. Suzuki calls this feature e-AllGrip, designed to enhance traction in rough terrains.

Design and Features

The e-Vitara comes with modern styling. It has tri-LED daytime running lights, a closed grille, and sporty skid plates. The alloy wheels are aerodynamically shaped, likely 18 inches. The rear design stands out with connecting taillights, an integrated spoiler, and bold e-Vitara lettering.

The charging port is neatly placed on the front flanks, while the AWD Trail mode improves grip by directing torque to wheels with traction.

India’s Big Step in the Global EV Market

Maruti Suzuki makes India a significant player in the EV market by manufacturing the e-Vitara for foreign markets. India’s growing importance in clean mobility is highlighted by the mix of domestic battery manufacturing and international exports.

India’s dual strategy of launching an electric SUV and producing batteries demonstrates the country’s strong commitment to environmentally friendly energy and sustainable transportation.
