A 26-year-old woman from Ghaziabad has accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to extreme physical, emotional, and mental abuse. She alleged that her husband forced her to work out for three hours every day to achieve a body like Bollywood actor Nora Fatehi. Failure to comply resulted in being denied food. She further claimed that she was harassed for dowry, forced into an abortion, and eventually suffered a miscarriage.
Marriage Worth Rs 77 Lakh Turned Nightmare
The survivor, identified as Shanu or Shanvi, married Shivam Ujjawal on March 6 in Ghaziabad through an arranged marriage and her family spent over Rs 76 lakh on the wedding, which included Rs 16 lakh worth of jewellery, a Mahindra Scorpio worth Rs 24 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh in cash. Shanu hoped to begin a happy chapter of her life, but soon her world collapsed. She said her mother-in-law kept her engaged in household chores and denied her time with her husband. The couple was not allowed to go out together.

Daily Torture for Nora Fatehi-Like Body
Shanu alleged that her husband, a physical education teacher at a government school, often accused her of ruining his life. He told her that he could easily find a partner as beautiful as Nora Fatehi. Despite her fair complexion and average height, she said she was constantly body-shamed, and she was forced to work out for three hours daily. If she failed, her in-laws denied her food for several days. She also accused her husband of being a womanizer who watched inappropriate videos of women on YouTube and Instagram.
Lack of Privacy and Dowry Harassment
Shanu revealed that she was not allowed to shut her bedroom door, and her father-in-law would walk in unannounced, and she alleged that her in-laws demanded more money, jewellery, and expensive items despite her family already spending a huge amount on the wedding. When she resisted, she faced verbal and physical abuse and once, when her husband threw a diary at her face, she complained to her in-laws but was instead asked to get new clothes and an OTG oven from her maternal home.
Forced Abortion and Miscarriage
Shanu said her pregnancy brought her joy, but her in-laws showed no concern. Soon after, her sister-in-law Ruchi allegedly forced her to take an abortion pill. Shivam reportedly told her that since he could not accept her, he would not accept her child either. She recalled being given curd with spices, which later caused throat burning. On July 9, when she fell sick and visited a hospital, she had already lost blood and suffered a miscarriage.

Complaint Filed After Threats and Expulsion
On June 18, Shanu’s parents took her back home after noticing her poor condition. The same day, Shivam and his family threatened her with divorce. When she returned to her in-laws on July 26, they denied her entry and refused to return her jewellery and clothes. On August 14, she filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws, alleging physical assault, dowry harassment, emotional abuse, forced miscarriage, and threats. She has demanded a thorough probe into the matter.
