The Northeast monsoon has entered one of its most active phases and the Indian Meteorological Department has given a fresh signal about the arrival of yet another weather system in the Bay of Bengal. A fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay by Saturday and forecasters say it may strengthen as the weekend approaches.
The timing puts coastal Tamil Nadu on alert, as the state is already dealing with a weaker system sitting between south Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka that has been triggering scattered rain and unstable conditions.
Understanding Why Low Pressure Matters
The formation of low-pressure areas is normal during the season, but their behavior makes all the difference between minor and really disrupting conditions. As the atmospheric pressure lowers, moisture congregates and clouds gather, leading to scattered heavy to moderate rainfall.

The pattern is likely to persist for the week, with Friday being a possible resurgence of strong rain bands as the new low-pressure area begins to mature. Residents are being cautioned to expect intermittent downpours and cloudy skies through the weekend.
Rough Seas & Safety Advisories for Fishermen
The IMD has warned that strong winds, with wind speed touching 55 to 60 kmph will make the sea conditions along the Tamil Nadu coast rough. The fishermen have been advised against venturing out into the sea before November 21 as rough seas and sudden gusts could prove fatal.

Such advisories are issued routinely during the monsoon, but such warnings assume greater importance this year due to the back-to-back formation of weather systems.
Why these systems matter each monsoon
Tamil Nadu and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh rely heavily on the Northeast monsoon. Almost half of the region’s annual rainfall arrives during these months. While storms may cause disruption and occasional flooding, they also replenish groundwater and fill reservoirs.
