Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik passed away at the age of 79 on Monday at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. His personal secretary KS Rana confirmed the news, stating that Malik had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications over the past few weeks.

Malik had earlier taken to social media to update followers about his deteriorating health. On June 8, he wrote on X, “My condition is serious.” Just a day before, the former governor had posted, “I have been hospitalised for the past month and am undergoing treatment for kidney-related issues.”

Known for his outspoken views and significant roles across multiple states, Malik held gubernatorial positions in Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Bihar, and Meghalaya. His tenure in Jammu and Kashmir was especially notable as he served during the abrogation of Article 370.

The news of his passing has drawn condolences from across the political spectrum, with many remembering him as a bold and unfiltered voice in Indian politics. Funeral details are expected to be announced shortly.

His contributions to public service, especially during politically sensitive times, mark him as one of the most distinctive figures in recent Indian political history.
