ED Conducts Raids in Kolkata Over Financial Irregularities at RG Kar Medical College; Trinamool MLA and Former Principal Under Investigation

On Tuesday morning, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) carried out search operations at multiple locations in Kolkata in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, according to officials. One of the ED teams also searched the residence of Dr. Sudipto Roy, a Trinamool Congress MLA, who is under investigation by the central agency for his involvement in the financial irregularities at the medical institution.

Details on the case are still emerging. Earlier this month, the ED conducted a search at the home of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Chinar Park, Kolkata, as part of the investigation. The ED had registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to investigate money laundering allegations against Ghosh in relation to the financial irregularities case.

On September 10, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court remanded Sandip Ghosh and three others to judicial custody until September 23. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch on September 2 following an investigation into corruption and financial misconduct at the college, which was initiated by a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

In a separate but related matter, the CBI also conducted a second round of polygraph tests on Dr. Ghosh as part of their investigation into the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The court has granted the CBI three weeks to present a progress report on this investigation, which is due today, September 17. The female trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the college on August 9.
