DMK leader Baalu criticises governors’ conduct in Lok Sabha

DMK MP T.R. Baalu addressed the conflict between Governors and Chief Ministers in several States in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Without specifying names, he criticized some Governors for behaving as if they disregarded the Constitution.

Baalu urged President Droupadi Murmu to take action against them. His remarks were made during his response to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address to both Houses of Parliament. In addition to discussing the lack of Central funds promised for dealing with floods in Tamil Nadu, he alluded to the strained relations between the government and Governors in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Baalu expressed discontent with the behavior of some Governors, stating that they seem to believe they are above constitutional considerations. He highlighted instances where Governors have clashed with elected governments, suggesting a lack of harmony in the democratic process. He cited an incident in a particular State Assembly, possibly referring to Kerala, where a Governor reportedly read only the last word of the government’s policy statement during the Motion of Thanks.

The MP emphasized that the President’s speech represents the government’s policy statement and is carefully vetted by the Union Cabinet.
He called attention to the fact that recent events have shown Governors engaging in confrontations with elected governments, creating an undesirable dynamic.
