A nightmare unfolded in North Goa hours after a popular nightclub blaze claimed 25 lives, and a well-known Mumbai-based DJ narrowly escaped. DJ Nicky (Mita Nikki) posted on Instagram, “Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you know I’m okay and safe.” She added that the fire broke out before she could reach the club. Still shocked, she urged prayers for the victims and their families.
Her statement comes amid grief and outrage after a horror night at Birch by Romeo Lane suddenly turned deadly.
Fire at Midnight: What Went Wrong at Birch
The fire broke out shortly after midnight at the club in Arpora. At the time, the venue was packed with party-goers on the dance floor, while many staff members were working in the kitchen and basement.
Eyewitnesses claim the flames began when a “pyro gun” or indoor fireworks hit the wooden-thatched roof, causing an instant spark. The fire spread rapidly, leaving little time for escape.
The club’s structure — narrow exits, flammable décor, and poor ventilation — turned the place into a death trap. Many victims died of suffocation as smoke filled the dance floor, basement, and kitchen.
Death Toll and Victims: Staff, Tourists Among the Dead
The blaze killed 25 people — the majority were club staff working overnight. Others were tourists visiting for a night out. At least four from a single family from Delhi were among the casualties.
Around six others suffered injuries and were rushed to the hospital. The severely injured are currently under treatment.
Arrests, FIR, and Investigation Underway
By Sunday evening, police arrested four senior staff of the nightclub — including the chief general manager, gate manager, bar manager, and another general manager — and filed an FIR against the club owners and organisers.
Authorities have also suspended some government officials responsible for granting licenses to the club. They said the club operated despite fire-safety violations.
Officials launched a full investigation. They are examining building permits, safety clearances, and compliance with fire laws.
Aftermath: Safety Failures Draw Criticism and Demand Reforms
Survivors and eyewitnesses described chaos: people trapped in the basement, panic on the crowded dance floor, no clear exits, and a slow rescue response. Many blame “gross negligence” and call it a preventable tragedy.
The fire reignites a wider debate about safety standards at clubs and entertainment venues across Goa and India. Many demand stricter enforcement and regular audits — especially ahead of peak tourist season.
