Delhi has stepped up its fight against toxic air as pollution levels refuse to improve. With smog choking the city and health risks rising, authorities have rolled out some of the strictest traffic and fuel rules seen this season.

From December 18, Delhi will block the entry of older vehicles and tighten checks at petrol pumps. The measures aim to cut emissions quickly as air quality remains in the severe category across the capital and nearby regions.

Why Delhi Tightened Vehicle Rules

Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has stayed at alarming levels for weeks. Many areas have recorded Air Quality Index readings above 400. Such levels fall under the “severe” category and pose serious health risks.

Doctors have warned residents to limit outdoor activity. Schools, offices, and commuters continue to face disruptions. In response, the government decided to act fast.

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced emergency steps to reduce vehicular emissions, one of the biggest contributors to pollution.

Only BS6 Vehicles Allowed to Enter Delhi

From Thursday, December 18, only BS6-compliant vehicles can enter Delhi. This rule applies to vehicles registered outside the city as well.

All BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles will face entry restrictions. Authorities will stop these vehicles at city borders.

The ban covers private cars and commercial vehicles. Only vehicles used for essential and emergency services are exempt.

No Fuel Without PUC Certificate

Delhi has also tightened rules at fuel stations. Petrol pumps will now deny fuel to vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control certificate.

Fuel stations have received clear instructions to enforce the rule. Staff must check PUC certificates before refuelling vehicles.

Officials say the move will discourage poorly maintained vehicles from operating on city roads.

GRAP Stage IV Implemented Across NCR

The Commission for Air Quality Management has activated Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan across the entire NCR.

Stage IV comes into force when AQI levels approach or cross 450. It triggers the strictest pollution-control measures.

Under this stage, authorities restrict vehicle movement, construction activity, and industrial emissions.

Which Vehicles Are Banned Under GRAP Stage IV

GRAP Stage IV bans BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles across Delhi-NCR. The ban applies to both private and commercial vehicles.

Only vehicles used for emergency and essential services can operate freely.

BS6-compliant vehicles face no restrictions. CNG, electric, and LNG-powered vehicles are also allowed. BS6 diesel commercial vehicles can enter the city.

Trucks carrying construction materials will face strict checks. Authorities may impose heavy fines or seize vehicles found violating the rules.

How Bad Is Delhi’s Air Right Now

AQI levels between 101 and 200 fall under moderate air quality. Readings between 201 and 300 are poor. Levels between 301 and 400 are very poor.

Anything above 400 is severe. In recent days, many parts of Delhi-NCR have crossed this mark.

Officials warn that if conditions worsen further, more restrictions may follow.

What Residents Should Do Now

Authorities urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel. People should use public transport where possible.

Vehicle owners must ensure they carry valid PUC certificates. Drivers of older vehicles should plan routes carefully to avoid penalties.

Officials say these measures are temporary but necessary to protect public health.
