The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its efforts to fight air and dust pollution as air quality continues to worsen in the national capital. With winter approaching a season notorious for smog and stagnant air the civic body has rolled out multiple measures to reduce dust and improve air cleanliness.
Major Initiatives to Control Dust and Air Pollution
MCD announced on Tuesday that it is taking several steps to keep Delhi’s roads cleaner and the city’s air healthier. The civic body manages around 6,130 km of roads, which are cleaned daily by nearly 57,000 sanitation workers. The collected dust and silt are being safely transported to designated disposal sites to prevent recontamination.
To specifically target road dust, MCD has deployed 52 mechanical road sweepers, which cover nearly 3,400 km of major roads on alternate days. Officials added that 18 more sweepers will soon be added to expand the cleaning network.
Water Sprinklers and Anti-Smog Guns Deployed
To suppress dust particles in the air, MCD is also using 167 water sprinklers and 28 mobile anti-smog guns. Additionally, 20 fixed anti-smog guns have been installed at landfill sites, and 15 more have been placed at high-rise buildings to reduce local emissions.
Road Repair and Improvement Projects
In the first half of 2025, MCD resurfaced and strengthened 224 km of roads and repaired over 7,600 potholes to minimise dust generation caused by damaged road surfaces. Officials confirmed that an action plan worth Rs 755 crore has been approved to further improve 591 km of roads and upgrade drainage systems across Delhi.
Through these combined measures, the MCD aims to provide significant relief from air pollution and dust accumulation, which remain major environmental and health concerns for the capital city.
