Delhi-NCR and Mumbai were hit by heavy rain on Tuesday, giving citizens a mix of relief and trouble. In Delhi-NCR, sudden showers with dust storms shook the afternoon, while in Mumbai, nonstop rainfall left many parts of the city flooded.

The rains lowered the heat but also caused travel problems and daily life disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that rain and storms will continue through the week.

Delhi-NCR: Sudden Storms & Showers

Parts of Delhi and nearby areas like Ghaziabad, Noida, and Faridabad saw strong rainfall on Tuesday afternoon. The showers came with powerful dust storms. Earlier in the day, the IMD had only predicted a partly cloudy sky with very light rain. But the weather turned out to be much more intense.

Around 1 pm, the IMD warned that Greater Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad could see moderate to heavy rainfall in the next hour. Soon after, parts of Delhi also got light to moderate showers. The forecast was accurate, as many places in Delhi-NCR experienced heavy rain for almost an hour.

IMD Forecast for the Week

The IMD has said that Delhi-NCR will stay cloudy until Sunday, August 24. Light rain, drizzle, and thunderstorms are expected throughout the week. This means relief from the high heat, but also the possibility of traffic jams and waterlogging.

Mumbai: City Under Water

Unlike Delhi-NCR, Mumbai faced heavy rainfall for the third day in a row. On Tuesday, many parts of the city were left waterlogged. Civic workers worked around the clock to clear drains and pump out water, but the flooding still disturbed normal life.

For safety, the Maharashtra government declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday. Government and semi-government offices stayed shut, while private offices were asked to let employees work from home. Emergency services, however, kept running.

According to the office of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai recorded over 150 mm of rainfall between 4 am and 11 am. The nonstop rain put extra pressure on the city’s drainage system, making it hard to cope.

Relief with Disruption

After several weeks of intense heat, the downpour helped to chill Mumbai and Delhi-NCR. However, it also resulted in safety hazards, traffic issues, and flooding.

Although the colder weather was appreciated, both cities now have to brace for more rain in the days ahead. The IMD’s forecast points to a wet and stormy week ahead.
