In a big infrastructure push, the Union Cabinet has approved a major expansion of the Delhi Metro network. The government has cleared the Phase 5A project, which will add 13 new metro stations across three key corridors. This move aims to strengthen city transport and cut down travel time for millions of commuters.

This expansion comes at an estimated cost of ₹12,015 crore and will be completed in the next three years. The decision marks one of the most significant metro growth steps in recent times and will push the total network length past 400 km.

What the New Corridors Include?

Under the Phase 5A plan, three separate routes will be developed:

  • Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha – 9.9 km (longest stretch)
  • Aerocity to Airport Terminal-1 – 2.3 km, improving airport access
  • Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj – 3.9 km route
  • Together, these routes add 16 km of new metro track with 13 stations designed to serve busy residential and commercial hubs across the capital.

Of the new stations, 10 will be underground and three elevated, blending efficient transit with city planning needs.

Big Lift for Commuters and Traffic Relief

Once operational, the expanded metro corridors are expected to:

  • Ease road congestion in heavy traffic zones
  • Offer quick last-mile connectivity
  • Make daily travel faster and less crowded
  • Transport experts say this expansion will reshape how people move across Delhi and neighbouring areas. The new routes target connections to major transit points and airports, which have long been priorities for city commuters.

Government’s Push for Urban Mobility

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the approval, highlighting how the project fits into broader urban transport goals. “The plan will significantly improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion,” he said.

This expansion aligns with ongoing work on other metro corridors, including the Phase-4 priority sections. Officials recently started construction on the Saket G Block–Lajpat Nagar stretch, part of the Golden Line project, which is expected to be completed by 2029 and add more elevated stations.

Bigger Vision for Delhi’s Transit Future

While Phase 5A focuses on 16 km central routes, transport planners are also eyeing larger future expansions. Proposals have been submitted to build up to 18 new corridors spanning over 200 km in the wider National Capital Region (NCR). If approved, this could change how people travel not just in Delhi, but all across NCR suburbs.

This strategic shift signals that the metro will not only expand within city limits but also extend connectivity to fast-growing regions in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh — easing long commutes and fostering regional growth.

Timeline and Expectations

Officials expect Phase 5A to be completed by 2028, providing residents with new travel options ahead of future city demands. With the network soon crossing 400 km, Delhi is moving closer to its goal of a seamless, high-capacity urban transport grid that supports economic and social growth across the region.
