Delhi HC dismisses plea seeking to change boundaries of UP, Punjab and Haryana

The Delhi High Court rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) petition on Thursday that called for changing the boundaries of several North Indian states, including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.

The petition also sought to relocate the capitals of Haryana and Punjab, as well as their High Courts. Justices Manmohan and Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, while dismissing the PIL, stated that courts cannot issue such directives or alter the boundaries of the country and its states.

They emphasized that this authority lies solely with Parliament and that the court cannot order a redraw of the country’s map. The petitioner, JP Singh, who represented himself before the bench, requested the respondents to merge Meerut Commissionerate, Sonepat, Faridabad, and Gurugram with Delhi. Additionally, the petitioner sought the merger of Chandigarh with Haryana.
