Delhi Excise Case: Arvind Kejriwal Seeks Bail, HC Hearing Set For July 5

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has moved to the Delhi High Court seeking bail in a CBI case related to the excise policy matter. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on June 26, 2024, over allegations concerning the Excise Policy of Delhi 2021-22. Kejriwal’s plea challenges his arrest and the subsequent judicial custody, contending that procedural norms under Sections 41 & 60A of the CrPC were not followed during his arrest. The High Court has agreed to hear the matter on July 5, 2024.

Kejriwal’s arrest has sparked controversy, with the CBI alleging non-cooperation during interrogation regarding profit margin enhancements and the hurried approval of the revised Excise Policy during the COVID-19 peak. The investigation also scrutinizes alleged meetings for illegal gratification and misuse of funds during the Goa Assembly Elections. CBI asserts that further custodial interrogation is unnecessary but raises concerns over potential tampering with evidence.

The case has drawn attention due to the influential political stature of Arvind Kejriwal and the legal complexities surrounding his arrest and subsequent bail proceedings. The Delhi High Court’s forthcoming deliberations are expected to shed light on the legal ramifications and procedural fairness of the ongoing investigation.

The Delhi Chief Minister’s legal team, led by advocates Rajat Bharadwaj and Mohd Irshad, has pressed for urgent listing and fair trial procedures, emphasizing the adherence to statutory provisions in handling the case. The matter remains contentious amidst political and legal scrutiny, awaiting further judicial review in the upcoming hearing.
