Cyclone Remal: IMD Issues Red Alert in Two Tripura Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a red alert for Sepahijala and Gumati districts in Tripura, anticipating intense rainfall and strong winds from Cyclone Remal on Monday. Moreover, an orange alert has been issued for the South, Dhalai, North, Khowai, Unakoti, and West districts of Tripura, forecasting heavy rainfall on May 28.

According to IMD, Tripura’s West district recorded 59.5 mm on Monday, followed by Dhalai (54.5 mm), South district (48.0 mm), Sepahijala district (42.0 mm), Khowai district (34.5 mm), Gomati district (33.0 mm), Unakoti district (27.4 mm) and North district (27.0 mm).

Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha urges vigilance as Cyclone Remal approaches, stating that state and district administrations are fully prepared to handle the cyclone’s impact. He urges residents to exercise caution.

He posted on X stating, “Dear Tripura residents, you are aware that under the influence of Cyclone ‘Remal’, moderate to heavy rainfall with gale force winds is expected in various districts of the state. State and district administrations are fully prepared to deal with this calamity. I appeal to the people of the state to exercise utmost caution.”

Meanwhile, neighboring Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Cyclone Remal can bring inclement weather in parts of Assam. We are taking several precautionary measures. NDRF & SDRF teams are on standby, control rooms are operational, and we are deploying a whole government approach to keep our citizens safe. Stay safe and please cooperate with your local administration.”

At a gathering held at his official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the Prime Minister directed that in addition to the 12 National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams already stationed in West Bengal and one in Odisha, additional teams be kept ready to mobilize within an hour, as per a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The IMD stated in its bulletin that the Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal,’ located over Coastal Bangladesh and neighboring coastal West Bengal, has been moving in a nearly northward direction at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour over the last six hours. As of 11:30 am IST today, it is centered over Bangladesh and adjoining areas of West Bengal.
