Workers of Congress from all over the country have opposed the remarks made by the Supreme Court regarding Rahul Gandhi’s statements on the Indian Army. Rahul’s statements concerning the incursions of China and his patriotism made Congress leaders across the country bitterly criticize the Supreme Court for its remarks. The INDIA bloc also condemned the observations made by the court as unwanted encroachment on the political expression. The issue was raised by Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate on X (formerly Twitter).

Priyanka Gandhi, Congress MP and sister of Rahul, further stated that judges cannot decide who is a “real Indian,” replying directly to the statement of the SC Bench in its defamation case. The bench had stated, “A true Indian would never say this,” dismissing Rahul’s allegations that China occupied 2,000 square kilometers of Indian territory.

Justice Dipankar Datta asked, “How do you know this?” referring to Rahul’s testimony of sources which led the Congress leaders to contest such a statement. Such remarks saw a backlash from Congress leaders like Jairam Ramesh, saying, “The Modi government has exercised the worst denial” over “what China has done and has now become the worst loss since 1962.”

According to Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala, Chinese occupation exists and is something undeniable, and people can question the government since it is their patriotic duty. He announced: “So if this is contempt, then I accept it.”

Rahul Gandhi’s attorney, Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi, commented that overall, the court has been favorably inclined towards Rahul, staying all proceedings regarding the defamation case. Singhvi accused BJP supporters of misinterpreting the court’s remarks and warned of the illegitimacy of reading oral observations as final verdicts.

Rahul’s defense was also backed by Congress stalwarts such as Ashok Gehlot and Karti Chidambaram who cited Rahul’s nationwide ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and the tradition of sacrifice for India in the family. Gehlot condemns the aggression of BJP; Chidambaram, who said that court remarks are not binding, asked them to think about their implications on free political discourse.

Congress leaders Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Bhakta Charan Das of Orissa echoed the same sentiments and condemned the Supreme Court’s unjustified comments on questioning the Indianness of Rahul Gandhi.
